Mt Fuji & Hakone Day Trip from Tokyo: Which Tour to Book
Five Mt Fuji and Hakone day trips from Tokyo compared: what each includes, what you pay on the day, meeting points, and which one fits you. Prices checked October 2026.
For most first-time visitors the right answer is the classic group loop: a coach from Tokyo to Hakone Shrine’s lakeside torii, the Hakone Ropeway over Owakudani’s steaming valley, and the spring-fed ponds of Oshino Hakkai on the Fuji side, back in Tokyo by evening. The most-booked version costs $55 per person and is rated 4.6/5 from 8,374 reviews, with free cancellation up to 24 hours before. (Price and reviews checked October 2026.)
The calendar below is that tour. If you want the bullet train back, the Chureito Pagoda, or your own car and guide, the comparison further down shows which tour does it.
Five ways to do Mt Fuji and Hakone in a day
Every tour here leaves Tokyo in the morning and gets back in the evening, about ten to eleven hours in all. What changes is the route, what the ticket covers, and how you get home.

None of the group tours includes lunch. Most stop somewhere with restaurants or a convenience store, and several reviewers say they wished they had brought snacks.

What the ticket covers, and what you pay on the day
The cheap group tours look alike, but the small print differs in three places.
- The Hakone Ropeway. The classic loop and the Lake Yamanaka tour include one ropeway ride. The Chureito Pagoda tour includes it as a limited-time offer, so check the listing on the day you book. Bought separately, the ropeway costs ¥2,000 one way for any distance, or ¥3,000 return (fares checked October 2026).
- The Lake Ashi pirate ship. Only the bullet-train tour includes it. On the others it is optional, and the guide can buy you a ticket for about ¥1,700.
- Meeting point, not hotel pickup. The group tours start from fixed points. The classic loop meets at 7:30 at Tokyo Station (the “STAND T” spot by the BEAMS sign) or at 8:00 at Tokyo Mode Gakuen in Shinjuku. Only the private tour comes to your hotel.
Can you see Mount Fuji from Hakone?
Yes, on a clear day, from the Lake Ashi shore at Hakone Shrine, from the ropeway as it crests the ridge, and from Owakudani. But Hakone sits behind a ring of hills, and Fuji hides in cloud on many days, especially in summer. Winter mornings give the best odds.
That is why most of these tours also visit the Fuji side of the mountain. Oshino Hakkai’s spring-fed ponds and the Chureito Pagoda at Arakurayama sit much closer to the peak, so a day that starts cloudy in Hakone can still end with the mountain in view.
Is Hakone doable as a day trip from Tokyo?
Yes. The coach takes about two hours each way, depending on traffic, which leaves five or six hours for the sights. What a day trip cannot give you is time in an onsen. None of these tours stops to bathe, and the baths are at their best in the evening after the coaches leave. If the hot springs are the point of your visit, read our day-use onsen guide and think about staying a night.
When the weather changes the plan
The ropeway stops when the wind is very strong, and it can also stop when volcanic gas readings rise around Owakudani, even on days when the national alert level is normal. When that happens the tour swaps in a bus or spends longer elsewhere. One reviewer in October 2026 wrote that parts of their day were cancelled for weather and the guide gave them more time at the other stops. Our Owakudani and ropeway guide explains how the closures work.
Tour or Hakone Free Pass?
If you are comfortable with Japanese trains, the Hakone Free Pass from Shinjuku (¥7,100 for two days, checked October 2026) runs the same loop on public transport, and it is the better buy if you stay overnight. For a single day with Fuji in it as well, a tour is simpler, because the Fuji-side sights are hard to reach from Hakone by public transport. Our Hakone Free Pass guide has the full route.
